Cinders and Ash

Today, the smoke trail was added along with the sky. The guidelines used in the sky have been erased. Hills and trees are suggested very loosely with some vertical strokes. Again, the goal is to achieve a sense of action, of motion, of depth and of power through a combination of shape and dramatic lighting.

Yesterday's progress is included as a contrast to today's. In addition to the sky, shadowing has been added to the body of the locomotive.

It's really interesting to watch day by day as you build up the tonal areas and we can see it come to life. Just out of curiosity, do you ever work on scratchboard? This one seems like it's going to go past 50% black and I wonder if you ever consider that or you just prefer to work strictly with the ink on white?

I have often thought about trying scratch board and have seen some really interesting things done with it, but so far, I have not tried it. Part of the reason is that it is more difficult and expensive to do it. Sometime I may take on the challenge, though.
